The best ways to remove make-up stains from your laundry

We all love to have make-up that doesn’t budge during the day, however when that make-up gets on our clothes it can be a nightmare to remove. Anything from mascara, lipstick, or foundation can sometimes ruin our favourite items. Follow these simple tips on how to remove the most common and toughest make-up stains.

Mascara

Mascara can be difficult to remove as it is a very dark colour. First of all scrape as much of the dry flakes off as you can. Then buy a great pre-stain treatment from your supermarket such as Woolworths, and follow the instructions on the packet as to how long to leave it before laundering. Before putting your item into the machine, rub the stain gently to loosen the particles.

If this fails, and your clothing comes out with the stain there, repeat the process. You can also try using some dishwashing liquid to disintegrate the mascara before popping into the machine again.

Foundation

Having a great lasting foundation is one thing, but finding it all over your favourite clothes is another. Your clothes can also be ruined as quickly as having someone else giving you a hug and smearing it on your favourite top. Do not reach for the makeup remover as the oil in that will make the stain much worse.

As soon as you notice the stain, you can grab a damp cloth and try to rub it off, being careful not to spread it or rub it in too hard. Next, grab a mixture of white vinegar and water and blot your item, testing on an inconspicuous part first. This will help to break up the oil and chemicals in the foundation. Then throw it in the wash and it should do the trick!

Lipstick

Lipstick stains can’t go unnoticed on your clothes. The first thing to do is try to scrape off as much as you can, try using a credit card for this and avoid smearing further onto the clothes.

Next, spray some water onto the stain and follow up with a dash of dishwashing liquid or a good stain remover from the supermarket. Make sure your fabric is machine washable so you do not damage it. Whichever product you use on the lipstick, the aim is to dissolve the grease properties in it.

Rub a cloth from the outside to the inside of the stain, gentle removing it as you go and using clean parts of the cloth each time. This will help to lift the stain out without spreading it. Then you can pop it in the machine and it should come out without a trace.

Depending on the fabric of your clothing item you may need to change the type of chemical or product you apply to remove it. Also, ensure that you read the instructions on any product that you do use and follow them with care. Over use or leaving some products on your clothes too long can leave the fabric damaged or bleached. It best to treat stains as immediately as possible to avoid them settling into the clothing.
